Customer Service

You need to have the skills of a customer service representative because you’re going to be talking to a lot of people. You’ll need to answer questions, requests and complains from homeowners as well as speak with potential homebuyers and vendors. As a result, it’s important that you can remain pleasant when dealing with angry people and not take anything personally. You’ll also need to have great communication and listening skills, so you can get your point across clearly and understand what others are trying to say without assuming.

Maintenance

Being a maintenance technician is another part of your job. You don’t need to know how to do everything, but you should be able to perform some basic repair work, such as fixing a leaking faucet or a broken doorknob. Maintenance knowledge can also help you understand what needs to be done to fix something, even if you need to hire someone to do it. You’ll be able to know who you should hire and about how much it should cost to fix it.

Marketing

Sometimes, people move, so you may have a house or unit that is available. It’s your job to try and get someone into that unit as soon as possible, so you’ll also need to know a bit about marketing. You’ll need to create eye-catching ads that will draw in the right tenants and homebuyers.

Bookkeeping

Community managers also need to have some experience in bookkeeping. You don’t have to be a CPA or have extensive training, but you should know how to keep proper records of credits and debits. You’ll also want to be able to estimate how much something may cost, such as a repair, and be able to create a budget that works.

Being a community manager can be a rewarding job, but it requires a lot of work, and you’ll need to learn a lot of skills. Trying to manage a community without these necessary skills is a recipe for failure.
